Look beyond the postcard

Calle Crisologo is the image most people have of Vigan: cobblestones, a row of ancestral houses, a calesa passing through. But the street rewards slower looking. Treat it as a series of individual façades rather than a single photograph, and it starts to tell you how the city was built and who built it.

UNESCO inscribed Vigan as a World Heritage Site, describing its architecture as a blend of Filipino, Chinese and European influences. You can see that blend in the brick-and-timber houses and their sliding capiz-shell windows, which soften the light inside while the street stays busy outside.

Take the details with you

Start at the upper windows and follow them down to the street. Notice how a doorway, a timber frame or a roofline changes the character of each building, even where the houses stand shoulder to shoulder. The details are subtle, and they are what make the street worth a second walk.

Don’t stop at Calle Crisologo. De los Reyes Street and Plaridel Street run parallel to it, and old houses line both. They are usually quieter, which makes it easier to study a façade without the crowds. Walking all three gives you a fuller picture of the heritage district than the main street alone.
