A landmark in the city plan
St. Paul Cathedral is one of the buildings that gives Vigan’s historic centre its shape. UNESCO lists it among the principal buildings around the city’s two adjacent plazas, together with the Archbishop’s Palace and the civic buildings.
So don’t look at the cathedral in isolation. Read it against the open spaces around it. A building tells its story through where it stands in the city as well as through its architecture.
A cathedral in recovery
The cathedral was badly damaged in the magnitude 7.0 earthquake of 27 July 2022, which cracked its façade and the belfry. It has since reopened for worship, but restoration continues both inside and outside the building, so expect scaffolding and partly closed areas on your visit.
Treat the work as part of the cathedral’s story. Churches in this region have been damaged and rebuilt by earthquakes and fire before, and the building you see now is still being repaired.
Leave room for worship
St. Paul Cathedral is a working place of worship. If visitor access is available, follow the posted guidance on clothing, photography and quiet. Give worshippers space, and ask before photographing a service.
Continue to Plaza Salcedo for another view of the historic centre.
