Old Carcel Museum

The National Museum traces the building to Vigan’s town jail of 1657. The former provincial jail now houses Esteban Villanueva’s fourteen Basi Revolt paintings and memorabilia of President Elpidio Quirino, who was born here.

The jail served as Ilocos Sur’s provincial prison from 1818 until 2014, then reopened as a museum in 2015 after restoration. The galleries place the 1807 Basi Revolt paintings alongside material about traditional sugarcane wine, Quirino’s life and changing exhibitions in the North Wing.
